Can You Make Money as a Gamer?

Years ago, when games consoles were just finding their feet in the world, the idea of making money playing games might have seemed impossible. When youngsters were sat around on Christmas morning with their first PlayStation, the idea that they could make a living playing video games wouldn’t have even occurred to them.

It’s different for children today. They grow up not just playing games, but sharing ideas online, watching their favourite gamers on YouTube or Twitch. They might even see them appear on their favourite TV shows. They chat in the playground about how they want to be gamers when they grow up like it’s the most normal thing in the world.

But, is it just a fantasy or something for the lucky few? Or, could anyone with a love of games make money from their passion? In today’s world, where the internet is such a big part of our day to day lives, it’s easier than ever to earn a living doing things that you love, and fewer of us are working in more traditional roles. Making money as a gamer is undoubtedly possible. Whether it’s just a little pocket money doing something that you’d be doing anyway or a full-time income that allows you to give up your current job to work for yourself from home. Here’s a look at some of the great ways that you can earn money as a gamer.
  • Start a Blog
Bloggers can be very successful. Bloggers can grow a wide readership, filled with people that trust what they’ve got to say and respect their views. This trust and respect give the bloggers power. They can earn money through advertising, sponsored posts, working with brands and companies and even using their blogs as a platform to sell their own products.

The best bloggers write about things that they know about. They have a niche, a specialist subject that they can speak about with authority and knowledge. They don’t just write randomly about what takes their fancy. Their readers come to them for advice and tips, they feel like they know them and they want their opinions.

As a game blogger, you’ll have your specialist subject. You won’t make money just by playing
games, but you will use your gaming to power your blog. You could write reviews, tips, and  advice on new games. You could write games guides and interview other gamers and developers. You can work with other gamers, with developers, and with retailers. As a gamer, your blog would never be short of new content.

To run a successful games blog, you will need to be a confident writer. You’ll need a home office space with a computer and other supplies like discounted ink cartridges. You’ll need to be good at taking your feelings and views about games and putting them into the written word. You’ll also need some basic web design skills and some experience on social media. But, you can develop these over time, few bloggers start with advanced skills.
  • Get Vlogging
Vlogging on platforms like YouTube and Twitch, as well as on your own blog, is something that appeals to many gamers. You might still need to write occasionally, but most of the views that you share will be vocal. You’ll build relationships by speaking directly to your viewers. You might want to film yourself reviewing or talking about the latest games or consoles, but the best thing about being a gaming vlogger is that you don’t necessarily need to get in front of the camera if you don’t want to.

You can film the gameplay, as you commentate on what you are doing. Many of us do this to an extent when we play anyway, so it’s just a case of getting used to the idea of other people listening to you. As a gamer on video platforms, you can sell advertising space, and you might find that once you’ve built a name for yourself, games companies offer you money to play their games. But, you’ll need to build a large and devoted following first.
  • Live Stream
Source
Live streaming as you play is another option. You play, you commentate, and people watch. More and more live streaming options are becoming available, and in many ways it’s easier than filming, editing and then posting later. However, many gamers find that it takes a long time to build up a following and that it can be hard to stand out from the crowd in such a heavily saturated market.
  • Try Podcasting
Video isn’t the only way to make money and grow a following as a gamer. Despite the growth of video online, podcasting is still very popular. People listen to podcasts while they are at the gym, or in the car on their way to work. It can be just as easy to build relationships with your listeners, and a weekly podcast can become very successful. Speaking about games as you play them might not work as well as it does in video, but you can still talk about games and interview other people involved in the industry.
  • Write a Book
Of course, the internet isn’t the only way to make money from your gaming skills. You could write books, guides on your favourite games, tips on how to become a more serious gamer or in-depth looks at your favourite franchises. You could write a book of interviews with other gamers, or about your experiences of trying to make money gaming.

You could start by self-publishing your books as ebooks, and then see how popular they are before considering taking them to print.
  • Competitive Gaming
Source
Competitive gaming is a serious industry. The best competitive gamers today earn as much as famous sportsmen and women. And, you don’t need to do it alone. There’s also the option to join e-gaming teams.

Competitive gamers treat their play as sport. They practice, they enter competitions, and they train seriously. It’s easy enough to find competitions, and the more popular and bigger than game, the higher the prize is likely to be. However, with so many competitors, even the best gamers can find themselves struggling to get close to the prize. You might want to start out with smaller, less well-known contests. The prize might be smaller, but you’ve got a better chance of winning.
  • Testing New Games
Games developers are often on the lookout for experienced gamers to test new ideas and products. The pay isn’t always great, but it’s a fantastic way to earn a little money while getting to try some of the best new games on the market.
  • Journalism
If you enjoy writing, but don’t like the idea of a blog, games journalism might be an option. Start writing some guides and opinion pieces and see if you could get work as a freelancer. Pitch your ideas to gaming blogs, online magazines, and newspapers.
  • Creating Your Own Games
Creating games is a much more appealing option that it’s been in the past. You don’t need to spend years developing a huge game to get started. You could take an idea and turn it into an app or online game. Some of the most popular games on smartphones are those with incredibly simple concepts and rather basic graphics. Work with an app developer if you’ve got an idea but no experience.

Of course, playing games doesn’t necessarily give you the skills that you might need to create your own. But, it does give you an idea of what works and what doesn’t. You might be able to hit on a great idea and build it up, more easily than someone with less experience of the gaming world might.

If you want to make serious money as a gamer, enough to give up your job and turn your hobby into a full-time career, you may want to try as many of these as you can. Have a go at different things, find what you are good at and what you enjoy. Spend time building a following and finding your feet before you worry about committing to one income stream.

It’s also crucial that you realize that if you want to turn your hobby into a career, it will stop being just a fun way to pass the time. You’ll still get enjoyment from playing games, and you’ll still have fun. If anything, you need to find ways to still enjoy yourself if you want to be successful. You don’t want to become bored and see it as just another job. The kind of which that you are probably trying to escape. But, it’s important that you do start to see gaming as a job. You’ll need to work hard and commit time to your new business. You’ll need to hone your skills, practice new ones and start to sell yourself as a business person as well as a gamer. You’ll need to find ways to stay professional whilst still showing the world your personality, always remembering that it’s this that sets you apart from all of the other gamers out there.

Cheers!!!
