How to delete voice recordings stored by Amazon Alexa

There have been several cases where people raised complaints about Amazon Alexa, storing all the voice interactions and transcripts on Amazon's server. In a recent letter from Amazon, the company has also confirmed that they store the commands permanently until a user chooses to delete them manually.

Senator Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware, sent a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in May, asking information on Alexa voice recording and for how long it keeps the record saved and do they share them. A senior Amazon executive, in reply to the letter, wrote that Amazon could "retain customers' voice recordings and transcripts until the customer chooses to delete them."

Deleting recording manually does not ensure that the recording and all the other data is no longer in Amazon's hand.

Method 1: Delete recordings one-by-one:
The Amazon website allows users to review each recording and delete them one-by-one. To do that, follow the steps.
  • Head to Amazon India website and log in to your account
  • Now, click on the drop-down menu placed near 'Account & lists' and choose the option 'Manage your Content and Devices'
  • Then head to the 'Alexa Privacy' section from the top
  • Choose the date range and click on the recording and delete them one-by-one

Method 2: Delete all the recordings at one go:
  • Head to Amazon India website and log in to your account
  • Now, click on the drop-down menu placed near 'Account & lists' and choose the option 'Manage your Content and Devices'
  • Click on the 'Devices' tab and click on the registered Alexa device from the list
  • Towards the bottom left corner, click on the option 'Delete all recordings'
Cheers!!!
