Everything You Need to Know About the iPhone 11

Apple has announced its newest successor in its line of coveted smart devices. At its fall 2019 event, the tech giant unveiled not one but three smartphones that will be released later this month – the iPhone 11, the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone Pro Max.

How Much Will These Devices Cost?
There are 2 components to the cost of an iPhone. The device charge and the fee you pay monthly, to access the network services it uses. Historically, people have typically opted for the ‘contract’ option, signing up to an agreement with a phone company which stays in place for 2 or now sometimes 3 years and effectively splitting the cost of the device over that period. The majority of people, more than 50%, now buy the hardware themselves and add their own prepaid SIM – something that was extremely rare even only 2 years ago.

From a hardware only perspective, the cost of this year’s slew of iPhone devices is most heavily influenced by the model and storage. Here’s a breakdown of the cost of each device:

The launch price of the iPhone 11 is noticeably cheaper than that of its predecessor, the iPhone XR. In fact, this is the most affordable iPhone to be released within the last five years.

What are the Specifications of each Device?
The latest iPhones have a range of features designed to get customers interested in the latest design. Some of the areas Apple have upgraded are the smartphone’s:

Just like the iPhone 11, both the Pro and Pro Max have finger-resistant oleophobic coating and support the display of multiple languages and characters at once.

Camera
The iPhone 11 boasts a dual-lens camera — an upgrade on the XR’s single camera. The camera is a dual 12-megapixel with Ultra Wide and Wide display. Both the Pro and Pro Max take their cameras a step further with three 12-megapixel sensors. These sensors bear the following specifications;

  • Wide (26 mm, f/1.8 OIS);
  • Ultra-wide (13 mm focal length, 120-degree FOV, f/2.4 aperture) and;
  • Telephoto (52mm, f/2.0, OIS).

With Ultra-Wide shots, up to 120 degrees of the field of view can be captured. The camera offers brighter True Tone flash for Slow Sync, Night Mode for low light photography, wide colour capture for photos, as well as live photos and slow motion selfies.

All cameras sport a new video feature called “QuickTake”, which enables users to take videos by long-pressing the camera button. Video quality has been amped to 4K resolution at 60 frames-per-second as well as including time-lapses and expanded dynamic range.

Internal Features
The iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max will utilize a first-of-its-kind A-13 Bionic CPU. With this chip, Apple’s next generation of smartphones are expected to run up to 6x faster than their predecessors, the A12 chip. All devices are expected to offer 20% more powerful graphics while the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) will utilize 40% less power. Wireless charging will be available due to the glass backs on each device.

All devices will run on Apple’s newest operating system, the iOS 13. The iOS 13 offers a range of impressive features including Dark Mode, Quick Path, Memoji and Messages. Improvements have also been made to Apple’s Virtual Assistant, ‘Siri’. With iOS 13, Siri will sound more natural, act more intelligently and interact better with third-party entertainment apps. Apps will launch 2x faster than previous iOS models and Face ID on models above iPhone X will function 30% faster than previous models.

Will the New Generation of iPhones live up to their Expectations?
The tech giant has witnessed a rapid decline in the sale of their mobile devices since 2018. According to a study by Gartner, during the fourth quarter of 2018 Apple sold only 64.5 million units of the device. This earned Apple 15.8% of the market share. These figures are down significantly – in Q4 of 2017, the company recorded 73.2 million unit sales and 17.9% of the market share. The decline witnessed by Apple was the biggest decline witnessed by any smartphone manufacturer during the period.

Given these drawbacks, there is enormous pressure on all models being put out later this month. Having multiple options for consumers that include a range of prices will potentially increase the appeal of this release. While no major changes to the device have been announced, the specifications have been upgraded across the board, and stand-out features like the range of new colors could well entice die-hard Apple fans into an upgrade.

Apple have wisely included a range of devices including varied storage capacities, colors and tech means more customers are likely to consider a purchase. While the smartphone market is becoming more saturated and technological innovation is slowing down, the iPhone has enough brand appeal to ensure sales. However, it will soon become evident if that brand appeal is enough to recreate Apple’s historical levels of market saturation, or if customers will increasingly turn to other, more affordable options.

Cheers!!!
