How to enable dark mode on Chrome, Firefox and Safari

Now days people usually prefer to activate Dark Mode for most of the apps which supports this feature. Whatsapp had rolled the same feature some time back. This feature won't affect other browser pages and dont need any plugin for installation. The dark mode implementation gives users the darkened theme without taking anything away from the performance of other open tabs on your browser, and it is only a simple little trick that gets the job done.

Although the most desired by the users, the dark theme for WhatsApp is currently under development and hence it is not available for either WhatsApp Web or Desktop update in any region. Yet, it can be enabled either by using the Inspect Element option on your browser or by installing an extension.

  • To begin with, go to WhatsApp Web on your computer and log in via the QR code. To do this, open WhatsApp on your Android phone -> tap the three-dot icon on the top-right corner -> Settings -> WhatsApp Web. On iPhone, open WhatsApp -> Settings -> WhatsApp Web.
  • Scan the code on your computer's screen and log in.
  • Right-click the WhatsApp Web page (outside the chat) and click 'Inspect'. The browser now brings the console and the code of the page.
  • Now, scroll at the top of the code and search for body class="web". On some browsers such as Safari for Mac, you might have to search for body class="web text-rendering-bug-fix".
  • Right-click this line > click Edit.
  • Now change it to body class="web dark" or body class="web dark text-rendering-bug-fix".
  • Press Enter on the keyboard or just click anywhere else on the page to apply changes.

While the background of the chat windows are set to a super dark shade of olive green, the chat tabs are set to a slightly lighter shade. Received messages show up on a grey text snippet, while sent messages are encased in lighter green bubbles. Despite not being officially baked into the WhatsApp Web client’s settings, the overall dark theme looks quite appealing and professionally put together.

WhatsApp Dark Mode on Android and iOS phones were rolled out with much hype and fanfare. Through 2019, it made for the most wanted WhatsApp feature among its 2 billion-odd active users, and going forward, WhatsApp's implementation of a system-tied dark theme has been received quite well among its audience.
